Description
Angelique Kidjo, whose work has garnered her five Grammy nominations, has spread her rhythmic Afro-funk fusion to the four corners of the globe. The electrifying Benin-born, Brooklyn-based vocalist is the most popular female African artist to emerge since her idol Miriam Makeba. With her fun-loving personality, her on-stage charisma and her totally unique voice, Kidjo cross pollinations the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of American R&B, funk and jazz, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America. Throughout her career she has collaborated with a diverse group of international artists, including Carlos Santana, Gilberto Gil, Dave Matthews, and Joss Stone.

When the Grammies were announced this past December, Angelique was recognized for the fifth time in the category of Best Contemporary World Album for her Razor and Tie Entertainment/Starbucks Entertainment release Djin Djin. This acclaimed new album features duets with Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, and many more.

Kidjo is also known for her work with UNICEF. She recently launched Kidjo's Batonga Foundation Girls’ Education Program in Benin, West Africa.

The Batonga Foundation and World Education are providing girls with an education package that includes scholarships, mentoring and sports clubs that help girls support each other and build confidence in their talents and abilities. Together, the organizations are giving girls a secondary school and higher education so they can further their studies and take the lead in changing Africa.

This is the first activity of the Batonga Foundation, which was created by Ms. Kidjo in November 2006 to increase the number of African girls pursuing and completing higher education. World Education was selected as Batonga’s implementing partner for its many years of experience in girls’ education, with specific expertise in Africa.
