Description
Everyone loves the Carmel Art Festival. Visitors and locals get excited when they come into town and see the festival tents set up on Mission Street, the sculpture exhibits and Steven Whyte doing “Sculpture Live” in Devendorf Park along with the live music the festival provides. Everyone is fascinated to learn about Plein Air painting and everyone is surprised to learn the paintings are still wet. They want to go and find the artists as they paint. It is a fun game. But what is important to the success of the festival is that someone picks up a pen and bids on the paintings by 6 pm on Saturday when the silent auction ends. There are hard costs to the festival even though all the planning and manning is done by volunteers. Last year, paintings sold for between $450 and $3550. The average price of a painting sold was $1,380. The festival awards over $20,000 in prize money to compensate artists for the expense of traveling here and participating. The sale of their paintings is shared with the festival in a 50/50 split. Proceeds after paying expenses are donated to local youth art programs. The festival’s charities include the Youth Art Collective, the Carmel Youth Center and the Monterey Art Council’s Professional Artist in the School Program. The Carmel Art Festival is a 501c3.
