  • Bars and Lounges

    Carmel has a wide choice of drinking establishments. Barmel, a recent addition to the area, offers music on the weekends and a lively and intimate atmosphere for guests to enjoy signature cocktails. Another fun spot is Vesuvio’s rooftop bar located on top of Vesuvio’s Restaurant. The bar boasts comfortable seating, heaters and fire pits to keep guests warm under the cool nighttime sky. Sade’s on Lincoln has a nice neighborhood bar vibe Brophy’s Tavern is a great stop for sports fans with food and drinks. Jack London’s Bar and Grill rounds out the list as the oldest pub in Carmel. It’s a great stop for live music on Fridays.

    Carmel has more than 50 restaurants packed into a one square mile, many of which have received some of the highest ratings in dining. With this density, it is not difficult to find a style of cuisine or dining experience to fit the mood on any given night. Some of the top picks in the area are Casanova, Yafa, Flying Fish, Grasing’s and Dametra Café. However, many restaurants often fill up quickly and a reservation should be made in advance.

    Sunset Center in Carmel is one of the premier arts facility on the Monterey Peninsula. Sunset’s season includes events such as the Monterey Symphony, iconic 80s Bands, dance troupes, Shakespeare productions and the occasional comedian. The Golden Bough Theater also offers off Broadway productions in an intimate setting. The company offers a variety of shows in its two venues with a season that begins in August. The Cherry Center for the Arts is another venue in Carmel that presents original and contemporary fine arts in a garden-like setting. The Center has an intimate, 35 seat theater that showcases local artists but well worth the ticket.

  • The Beach

    For a quieter night out, Carmel Beach offers the perfect opportunity to be out among the stars. It is one of the few beaches in California that still allows bonfires. Fires are allowed south of 10th Avenue and Scenic Drive and must be extinguished by 10pm.

    Monterey’s Downtown and Cannery Row has several options for nightlife activities. In downtown Monterey, Cibo Ristorante hosts live music almost every evening. Britannia Arms Pub & Restaurant offers a friendly pub environment with occasional live music and Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill and Peter B’s Brewpub are known for their craft beer selection. Cannery Row also offers a small selection of nightlife destinations, with live music, karaoke and pool.

    Big Sur is not often thought of as a nightlife destination, however, there are a few options throughout the year. Henry Miller Memorial Library offers occasional concerts, featuring a variety of artists and music types as well as film screenings and theatrical performances. World-famous touring acts, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Flaming Lips also sometimes stop by the area intimate performances. Big Sur Taphouse offers a stop for local brew and food. Another option is the Maiden Publik House, offering a large selection of beers and local musicians jamming on weekends.
