| Description Neal Cassady was the model for Jack Kerouac’s lead character in the classic novel "On the Road." He was also the lover of poet Allen Ginsberg, who wrote, "Howl," which resulted in a notorious San Francisco 1957 obscenity trial. Cassady’s son, John, will tell tales about his father, Ginsberg, beats, hippies and Merry Pranksters.
The multi-media event will feature video, slides, music and poetry. John Cassady, now 56, and Jerry Cimino, curator of S.F.’s Beat Museum, will speak on “Beats, Broadway and Bohemians”. They’ll tell stories about the “free-thinkers in an oppressive post-war society” — including Bay Area personalities such as Wavy Gravy, Stewart Brand and Paul Krassner, as well as Carolyn Adams (Jerry Garcia’s wife, Mountain Girl) and the late Ken Kesey. The presentation, co-sponsored by the museum and the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, is free to SFMHS members. |
