DETAILS: The Funk is coming back and Uncle Jam wants YOU! After 2 epic months featuring legends like Afrika Bambaataa, Ursula 1000, and All Good Funk Alliance, Funkonnection returns to San Francisco on March 21 with a massive double bill featuring Ninja Tune UK legend Mr. Scruff, and dutch nufunk luminaries Kraak & Smaak.. Local heroes include Vinnie Esparza (Dis-Joint), and residents Motion Potion, and Malarkey. With Scruff making his first appearance at Mighty at this already buzzed-about party, tickets are sure to go fast.

Mr. Scruff's DJ name was inspired by his spotty facial hair, and his trademark loose-lined drawing style. He has been DJing since 1994, and is known for in marathon sets (often exceeding six hours), his eclectic musical taste, his love of a "nice cup of tea" and the quirky home-produced visuals and animations that are projected on large screens during his gigs. Scruff's debut album, Mr. Scruff, was released on the small Manchester-based label Pleasure Records. He soon moved to the larger Ninja Tune label, and subsequently released the albums Keep It Unreal and Trouser Jazz. His most notable hit "Get a Move On" is built around "Bird's Lament (In Memory of Charlie Parker)" by Moondog, and has been used in several commercials ranging from Lincoln and Volvo automobiles to France Télécom and GEICO insurance. All of his albums contain tracks about fish, whales and other sea-life, which cut up recordings of voiceovers from children's stories and nature documentaries to create surreal and silly stories. His album artwork and music videos are noted for their whimsical cartoonish look; many of the cartoons are drawn by Scruff himself, in what he calls "potato style." His sets are musical journeys that cannot be described to those who have not experienced them.

Kraak & Smaak, the Dutch breakbeat production trio, is heralded as one of Holland’s most important dance acts. Their organic breakbeats, full of brass stabs, guitar licks and a future-retro- phat-production-sound has drawn comparisons to Mark Rae and Thievery Corporation. Performing at over 120 headlines shows in Europe last year, Kraak & Smaak have been together for seven years. Oscar de Jong is the main knob twiddler of K&S but also plays guitar. Wim Plug has spun along side Portishead dj Andy Smith and Depth Charge’s Saul Kane. Mark Kneppers claims to have the largest record collection in all of Holland, from jazz to hip-hop and everything in between. As DJ Knuppelhout he has played at all the major venues from the Netherlands to Belgrade and mixed breaks for legendeary Dutch label, Fresh Fruit, in 1997. Jalapeno Records and Kraak and Smaak have kick-started a scene that isn’t all about the fit-inducing breaks that you sometimes come across – their 2006 album, Boogie Angst, fits everywhere. Its dance music to listen to, new music with old-school sounds, and funk for the next generation.
