Description
Recent paintings by Robert Townsend.

Robert Townsend approaches his latest series of paintings from his usual photorealistic standpoint, this time finding inspiration in anonymous photographs from the 1950s such as the surrounding white border, the black band underneath the image, names of events and people noted on the photo, and dates, and emphasizes a variety of these qualities in his paintings.

Townsend toys with the scale of each piece, enlarging a very small photograph to a monumental painting, often as large as six feet by six feet. He explores the effects the enlargement has on the meaning of the work; he purposely creates a lack of clarity and visual definition in the larger painting.
