Description
Everyone is welcome to attend any or all of this six week Discussion Series We will explore how to live in ongoing dialogue with the world, with each other, and with the messengers and the message of love/compassion.

7:45-9:30 Six Tuesday evenings July 7, 14, 21, 28 and August 4, 11.
$15 each session or $60 for series, or whatever works for you.

July 7: What Does Creation Tell Me?
How do you listen to creation? How can you know what it is telling you? You are invited to bring poems, art, and music of your choice to share your sense of what creation tells you. We will discuss the prayer “Worker of the Universe” by Rabindranath Tagore. We will discuss images of creation from art and science. We will hear “Awake the Harp” from “The Creation” by Haydn, and a piece from “The River” by Virgil Thompson.

July 14: What Do the Flowers of the Field Tell Me?
We will discuss the question “what can the flowers of the field tell you?” Bring a flower, or a bouquet, an image or a song to talk about. We will explore the poem “How Can I Possibly Sleep this Moonlit Evening” by the beloved Zen poet Ryokan. We will listen to “In the Forest” by Lithuanian composer Mikalojus Ciurlionis.

July 21: What Do the Animals of the Forest Tell Me?
Our own stories and images of animals will entertain and enlighten us. We will read the poem “Listening” by William Stafford. We will read the ancient Buddhist story, “The Tortoise that Refused to Leave Home” to hear the message from that tortoise. How could we not listen to “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens, or perhaps, “And God Created the Great Whales” by Alan Hovhaness.

July 28: What Do Human Beings Tell Me?
The great mystery. What is the most important message that you have ever received from another human being? What is the most important message that you have to share?

August 4: What Do the Angels Tell Me?
We will discuss ‘angels’ as messengers of the Divine. We will share “angel stories.” What do angels have to do with your life? We will explore the depiction of angels in art, from ancient to contemporary. We will read and discuss a wondrous poem by Rumi.

August 11: What Does Love Tell Me?
Love and compassion are the core ideas of so many wisdom traditions. What music, art, and poetry best convey the message of love to you?
This outline of questions was devised by Gustav Mahler, as the intellectual/philosophical/spiritual framework for his massive Symphony #3. You can explore Mahler’s ideas and music through the DVD “What the Universe Tells Me.” The DVD can be rented through Netflix or purchased through your regular music vender.

Ron Barton, M.Div., divides his time between Carmel and McCall, Idaho, where he also leads discussion groups. He loves the play between the souls of people listening to each other, exploring the spiritual traditions and the arts, sharing their own stories, their own experiences of the love, joy, and peace that can be ours amidst the contingencies of existence. He enjoys waking up to each new day. Contact Ron at 831-601-9407, or at ronbartoncarmel@aol.com.
