About St. John Passion
"Many of you will have heard the Bach John Passion when I last performed it in Carmel, semi staged and causing quite a stir!
This time I would like to present it in a completely different way, performing an unusual version that is rarely heard. Bach was forever changing his ideas on this piece, so after the first performances in 1724 he decided to write some new arias and choruses to give a completely different flow and architecture to the piece. In this 1725 version there are particularly explosive and dramatic new arias for Tenor and Bass soloists; these are pieces of the greatest quality that lay languishing at the back of our scores. This rare music, that Bach does not use elsewhere, needs to be heard, and what better place to try something different than in the Carmel Bach Festival."
