Internationally-known for Historic, Museum-quality, early California paintings executed 1880-1940.

Specializing in historically important, museum quality, early California paintings executed between 1880 and 1940, William A. Karges Fine Art is internationally known as one of the premier galleries in the U. S. Thomas Hill, Armin Hansen, William Wendt, Agnes Pelton, Selden Gile, and Granville Redmond are among the artists in the Gallery's holdings. Although there were significant still-life and genre artists active during this time, paintings from this period are predominantly landscapes. These works are usually rendered in a style reminiscent of the Hudson River School artists from the East Coast.

After the turn of the century, many of the paintings were done en plein aire (the French term for "in the air") and stylistically are closely aligned to the Impressionist artworks from Europe. Unlike the more academic and tonal qualities of the pre-1900 paintings, these works have high-key coloring and loose, airy brushstrokes. Artists from this second period are also the painters who founded the major art colonies in California such as Carmel and Laguna Beach.

The gallery also handles fine American paintings from all regions of the United States by painters such as Childe Hassam, Frederick Church, and T.C. Steele. In addition, we are the exclusive representatives of the contemporary artist, Dennis Doheny , who many consider to be the finest landscape painter working in the West today.

Karges Fine Art is also recognized for its superior level of scholarship and museum quality monographs and publications produced over the last few years. We are actively purchasing paintings from America's past and encourage you to contact us about works you would like to sell or acquire. The Karges gallery handles all sales, purchases and consignments on a personal and private basis. Since our founding in 1987, we have guaranteed the authenticity of each object we sell.
